Location: Carretera Austral (Southern Highway), onthe coastal route from the northern entrance to Puerto Montt or Varal, if you start out from Hornopirén.
Timetable: Departureat 09:00 hrs; Return at 20:00 hrs.
Meeting point: the Lahuán Cabins or Hornopirén Ramp (place to be agreed).
What to take: Camera, warm clothing, binoculars for flora and fauna spotting.
Includes: A specialist guide, transport, traditional lunch and snack.


This tempting coastal route is ideal for those who wish to observe and learn more about traditions, heritage, and culture, and those looking to be surprised through their taste buds in a setting of picturesque landscapes and sights, while spotting incredible coastal flora and fauna.

Along the way you’ll be humbled the immense majesty of the sea and have a rare glimpse into the daily life of local residents - charming characters who live their whole lives in the places we visit, that are full of ancestral traditions preserved by people who make them a way of life as they go about their traditional coastal customs, jobs and trades. Last, but not least,you get to take part!

Those who enjoy delving into the history of the places they visit will be able to discover and witness Contao town’s historical and social development, closely linked to alerce milling. Visitors will also be able to learn about the consequences that clear cutting this resource has caused.

On the tour we visit La Poza, whose main attraction is its church, where local believers meet and a building of great historical value built ofalerce wood in 1890,making it a candidate for becoming a National Monument; we then continue through Aulen, a traditional fishing, shellfish and diving port and drop by the Rolecha, Chauchil and Lleguimán beaches and the Poe caves - remarkable geological rock formations in Lleguimán, as well as Quetén, famous for its marvelous sunsets and beautiful bays such as Hulaihué Puerto. We finish at Mañihueco, visiting a local craftsman who has created a museum where he builds old Chiloé boats to scale.
